My Story
A warm Winniemay welcome to you.
I’m sure if you broke me in half like a seaside stick of rock it would say Art all the way through me. I think , read, look at, curate and most importantly make art pretty much all of the time. My journey as an artist began on the return to school aged six after the death of my mother where a teacher let me use her on desk pencil sharpener .Anyone who went to school in the seventies or eighties will get what a big deal this was.
It was from this time that creating became both a comfort and companion to me, I forgot everything when I was drawing at my Nans table and namesake Winnifred May , Winniemay . I never feel alone with Art.
Through my art I have a desire to explore human stories predominantly through portraiture. Through a lack of photographs of my mother and Nan I gain a lot of inspiration from discarded and forgotten black and white photographs and other objects.
Do you have a loved photograph that just so strongly evokes a memory or feeling of a person no longer around or never even met but it just resonates with you?
I see my paintings and portraiture as a visual love letters to the real, imagined and hoped for connections to our loved ones and each other. To me they are all one and the same as we find ourselves in each others images and stories.
I’d love you to come along for ride as I explore the stories in the images
